Cold Room Flooring
Types of Cold Room Flooring
There are various elements to consider when designing your chiller cold rooms, freezer cold rooms, or ambient temperature-controlled areas. One of these elements is the flooring system – choosing the correct flooring for your temperature-controlled space is vital to make sure it meets your needs correctly.
If you think you might need a new flooring system or are designing a new temperature-controlled space for your business, the MTCSS Contracts team is ready and able to help. Why not get in touch today to get started?
Do you need a floor in your temperature-controlled space?
There are specific factors that influence what flooring type is best for your temperature-controlled space. These include:
- The type of temperature-controlled space you have or will get
If, for example, your chiller cold rooms (0-8◦C) are built on a flat subfloor on the ground floor, you may not need a specialist seamless floor.
If your business relies on walk-in freezers, on the other hand, you should expect to need flooring options to avoid frost heave and to ensure your room has optimal insulation to keep out the warmer air and keep the refrigerated air generated from within contained.
- How your walk-in chiller or freezer room will be used
- The level of traffic moving in and out on a daily basis
- What is being stored
- Any cleaning and other Health & Safety requirements you need to meet
These can be very specific to your business needs and industry, so will be discussed with you to get a clear idea of your needs.
In some cases, however, you may not need a walk-in chiller or freezer flooring system for insulation, so it’s always best to check with the experts rather than spend money on flooring options you might not need.

Insulated Floor with Plywood & Overlay

Frequently Asked Questions
There is no ‘one size fits all’ option when it comes to cold room flooring – but we have a range of flooring depending on your application and industry.
- Insulated floors are the optimal choice for walk-in fridges and walk-in freezers – and they are required in freezers to avoid frost heave and ice build-up
- Altro flooring is designed for spaces that require frequent cleaning and chemical resistance
- Resin flooring is key for rooms that need trolley and vehicle access, the integration of drain systems, and frequent washing for hygiene reasons
- Granolithic screed floor is perfect for rooms that require forklift and vehicle access and store heavy product loads
The MTCSS team can help you understand the best type of walk-in flooring for your application or industry.
The construction of your cold room floor is dependent on the type of floor and what is being stored within it.
Rooms that store concentrated loads or have rolling loads moving in and out require an overlay for insulated floors to make sure they can withstand the weight and duty required as well as offering longevity and optimal function.
Insulated floors used in freezer cold rooms are generally constructed with an insulated panel and an overlay to reinforce the panel – though this does depend on the product stored and any access and egress requirements.
No – not all cold rooms require a floor. This is dependent on a range of factors:
• the temperature of your cold room – chiller cold rooms don’t need a floor, whereas freezer cold rooms do require a floor to avoid frost heave and ice build-up
• whether the existing floor your cold room is being built on is flat and fit for purpose
• if you require an easy clean, resistant floor solution
• where the cold room is being built – eg. Internally or externally, ground floor or first floor
But you don’t need to decide whether your cold room needs a cold room floor – MTCSS can help you understand best practice when it comes to cold room flooring and discuss the options to suit your requirements.
Drain systems in cold rooms are only required for cold room floors when there is a requirement to frequently wash out the cold rooms. If a cold room needs to be washed out with liquid, or is likely to be prone to spillage of liquid products, it will likely need a drain installed within the cold room floor. Examples of cold rooms which require frequent cleaning include; abattoirs, dairy farming and morgues.
Cold rooms which maintain negative temperatures – eg. freezer cold rooms, blast freezers – require a floor heater to ensure there is minimal risk of ice build and frost heave within the cold room. These both pose a health & safety risk and could result in costly issues if there is no floor heater installed. If cold rooms are built on a first floor (or above ground floor level) then these will also require a heater mat system.

Bert De Mooij, Bespoke Chiller Cold Room for Q Flowers Ltd 2021
From coming into contact with MTCSS to the finished product, has been a great and easy process.
The members of the team listened to our wishes and offered us exactly what we needed. From picking the type of cooler machines, the doors, the lights - everything was exactly adjusted to our wishes.
Even though through the COVID period where availability of materials were challenging, the cold room was finished on the date as was planned when signing for the order.
Very professional company from start to finish.

Catherine Hester Fenwick, Ambient storage at Brabourne Wines 2021
‘Brabourne Wine is a small, family run vineyard in Kent. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Conservation Area and with listed buildings, we needed to find a solution to store our wine without building afresh or making any material differences to the current buildings. MTCSS were amazingly flexible. They worked with us to develop a solution that fitted inside one of our outbuildings. Given the limitations on space and the requirement to have racking suitable for pallets, virtually everything about the project had to be bespoke but Darren never lost patience with the endless queries in the planning phase. Once on site, the team was professional, friendly, flexible and quick. They have delivered a solution which is perfect for our needs and exceeds our expectations. We are at the smaller end of their usual customer base, but we were never made to feel as though we were any less important than a major supermarket chain. We would certainly recommend them to anybody needing a controlled climate for storage (or any other reason)’

Dual Compartment Cold Room Installation, London
From the beginning I found Gem’s customer service fantastic, out of all of the companies we spoke to for quotes she was the most responsive and attentive. Even when we were still finalising and it wasn’t confirmed if we were proceeding with MTCSS yet, she was always great with keeping in contact to see if we needed anything, and very responsive with emails, and also phone calls.
Andy and Nathan, have been great throughout the entire process. Both have been on hand for any queries we have had and very responsive again to all forms of communication. Everything has been handled promptly and efficiently both before, during and after the build. Any questions we have had they have always gotten back to us with an answer very quickly.
The gentlemen who completed the install here on site, where very friendly and mindful of business operations while completing work. Each day they would check in with who was here in the morning to explain what they would be doing, what access they required, and asked if and how this might affect our operations or customers. Again, they were very clear and open with communication and was happy to help find solutions when we had issues with the shelving.
Overall our experience with you has been very good and we have been left a happy customer. I would also just like to say a thank you to yourself Gem, Nathan and Andy as you have all been very great throughout our customer journey!
