There are many elements to your cold room that you need to consider, but there’s one cold room component that not everyone thinks about – your cold room flooring.
Choosing the correct type of flooring for your cold rooms is imperative to ensure that your walk-in cold room is suitable for your application.
However, not all cold rooms will require a flooring solution. So, how do you know whether your cold rooms need one? Fear not, MTCSS is here to help.
Cold Room Flooring
MTCSS are here to walk you through cold room flooring, the types of cold room flooring we offer, and whether your walk-in fridge or walk-in freezer needs a floor.
So, what types of cold room flooring are there? Some of the types of cold room flooring that MTCSS can provide are:
- Insulated floor with hexafloor finish
- Insulated floor with plywood & overlay
- Altro flooring
- Resin flooring
- Granolithic flooring
We will discuss the different types of cold room flooring further in this article, but first we must decipher how to know if your walk-in fridges or walk-in freezers require a cold room flooring solution.
How Do I Know If My Cold Room Requires A Floor?
Your cold rooms might not always need a flooring solution. Typically, walk-in fridges and chiller cold rooms don’t require cold room flooring. Usually this occurs when your cold room is on a level surface.
This is beneficial as it means your walk-in fridge doesn’t require additional components and can still be efficiently insulated to provide the best temperature-controlled environment for your products.
But, this isn’t to say that you can’t have a floor in your walk-in fridges! If your cold room is installed outside, or is on uneven ground then our team may suggest that you could benefit from a flooring solution. Other reasons could include: frequent cleaning and floor strengthening for vehicle access.
However, walk-in freezers must have a cold room floor to avoid frost heave, and to ensure it stays optimally insulated for your products. Because they maintain such low temperatures, your products are at more of a risk.
The last thing you want is your cold room door to be frosted shut, and for your employees to get trapped inside! Which is why we always factor in an additional heater mat and threshold for your walk-in freezers to ensure this doesn’t occur.
Now we understand whether your walk-in fridges and walk-in freezers need a cold room flooring solution, lets understand the different types of cold room flooring in more depth.
Types of Cold Room Flooring
Above we briefly detailed the different cold room flooring options that MTCSS can accommodate. We’ll explore this further below:
Insulated floor with hexafloor finish
This cold room flooring is ideal for small to medium capacity walk-in fridges (where required) and walk-in freezers that experience high levels of foot traffic, as well as cold rooms where floor surfaces aren’t level.
This type of cold room flooring is often used in (but not limited to) the following industries: food and drink retail, supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants
Insulated floor with plywood & overlay
Similarly to above, plywood and overlay flooring is perfect for walk-in cold rooms that experience high foot traffic and have an uneven surface, as well as cold rooms with racking and pallets.
Altro flooring
Altro cold room flooring is ideal for cold rooms that are frequently washed with chemicals or require high-levels of cleanliness and water-resistance (such as farms, food storage and butchers).
Resin flooring
A resin floor is ideal for medium to large walk-in cold rooms that are frequently washed, require drainage systems and have heavy vehicle traffic.
Businesses that would typically use a resin flooring in their walk-in fridges and walk-in freezers are rooms that contain a water source, such as: butchers, test labs, food processing plants and warehouses.
This is because resin flooring is ideal for adhering to high levels of hygiene and whilst also being strong enough to adhere to heavy traffic on the floor.
Granolithic flooring
Granolithic cold room flooring is the most suitable option for your medium to large walk-in fridges and walk-in freezers that store heavy product loads and require forklift access – meaning that it is incredibly durable.
It is important to note that all cold rooms are different, and so will have different requirements depending on various factors. If you’d like more information on the cold room flooring options we can provide, get in touch with the MTCSS team today.
