How Much Does a Cold Room Cost?

Walk In Cold Room | MTCSS

Updated 8th December 2026

If you’re looking to install a cold room to store perishable products on your premises, you’ll need to budget for the equipment itself – plus installation of the cold room.

While each walk-in cold room price is different, basic cold rooms will, of course, cost less than more advanced, spacious, and work-intensive designs that come equipped with additional extras.

However, you do need to pay for the right design to match your refrigeration needs. Trying to save money on inadequate, cramped layouts can cost you more in the long run with spoilage and lost orders as opposed to investing properly in the first place.

The experts at MTCSS are here to advise on the factors that can influence how much your cold room installation will cost. So, read on to find out everything you need to know.

Elements That Affect The Cool Room Price

As with all bespoke installations, it’s not possible to give a cold storage room price without generating a quote. However, cold room installation cost can be affected by a number of factors, including:

  • The size of the cold room – The bigger it is, the more it will cost due to the increasing amount of materials and time needed to build it.
  • The complexity of the cool room – If you include aspects such as suspended ceilings or bespoke cold room elements, it will cost more due to the complex requirements of the space.
  • Cold room location – External cold rooms or those situated in the middle of the room can cost more as they will require an external roof for protection or additional pipework/refrigerant.
  • The type of cold room door used – Some types of doors can be more costly, thanks to the benefits they offer. For example, a sliding door will be more expensive than a hinged door, but this is dependent on your requirements and operations.
  • Any added extra specifications, including flooring and ancillaries – These additions in your room, such as flooring, racking, or shelving, will add further costs. But, as these items are sometimes essential to your day-to-day business functioning, you should consider them as necessary as a floor or door.
  • If you require back-up refrigeration – Adding back-up refrigeration in your cold room will ensure your products are protected in the event of an emergency, but will come with additional costs.

With all of this in mind, it’s possible to see why a blanket cost per cold room installation simply isn’t possible.

Additions to the Cold Room Price You Should Bear in Mind

To get the best from your new freezer or chiller cold room, there are two things you need to keep on top of: maintenance and usage.

While our expert team might have helped you with a cost-effective, yet high-performance design, costs can climb if you fail to look after your installation.

1.     Maintenance costs

At MTCSS, we understand how important the role of a walk-in chiller or freezer is to a business. As such, we advise that all businesses consider maintenance costs as well as the fridge/freezer room cost.

Failure to do so can lead to unwanted and unplanned costs in the near future that you weren’t expecting.

Maintenance top tips

  • Regularly inspect door seals, hinges, catches, and the fan – This ensures they are operating correctly and can be replaced as soon as needed.
  • Be observant for any signs of the cold room operating differently than normal – This might include unusual noises or the temperature not being as low as you expect.
  • Establish a maintenance schedule with a reputable company – To ensure that potential problems are detected, and minor performance issues rectified before they develop into more costly breakdowns, find your team before they are needed.

2.     Operation and usage

The efficiency of cold storage rooms can be greatly affected by day-to-day practices; in fact, some bad habits can significantly increase energy bills, leading to yet more higher costs.

Operational top tips

  • Keep the door closed – Every time a cold room is opened, cold air escapes and warm air from outside enters, so your refrigeration system needs to work harder. Discourage leaving the cold room door open while stock is loaded or removed from the cold room.
  • Install insulated curtains – When placed inside the door of the cold room, they reduce the escape of cold air when it is open. Cold stop curtains, which are more thermally efficient than traditional plastic versions, also incorporate a unique ‘cold lock’ system to ensure the barrier fits snugly, reducing thermal loss.
  • Don’t underload the room – Cold storage rooms should be maintained at a minimum 60% of capacity, to retain cold and reduce the refrigeration cycle.

The team at MTCSS want to ensure that your custom cold room works for you in the long run – which is why we offer a comprehensive quote, survey, installation, and after-sales process. And if you ever have a problem, we’ll waste no time solving it.

Modular cold room

Modular cold rooms

In most instances, a modular cold room price per installation is likely to be lower than that of a bespoke, built-in cold room.

This makes them more affordable, as well as faster to install.

However, they aren’t like-for-like replacements for cold rooms because they:

  • Can’t be made in bespoke sizes and shapes
  • Are not suitable for the full temperature range (-40 to +30°C)
  • Are suitable only for small to medium capacities
