A walk-in freezer is an insulated room or space that maintains negative temperatures (below 0 degrees celsius). Walk-in freezer are also commonly referred to as freezer cold rooms or freezer rooms.
In comparison, walk-in fridges (also referred to as walk-in chillers) maintain positive chilled temperatures – as opposed to the negative temperatures maintained by freezer cold rooms.
Walk-in freezers are used for variety of applications including:
• Storing frozen food products
• Freezing food products
• Electrical goods storage
• Bakeries, butchers, restaurants and more…!
Walk-In Freezer Specifications
Walk-in freezers are generally used for two purposes – to keep already frozen products froze, or to freeze chilled / ambient products.
• Holding Freezer Cold Rooms: walk-in freezers which are used to store already frozen products
• Pull Down Freezer Cold Rooms: walk-in freezers which are used to freeze chilled or ambient products
• Blast Freezer Cold Rooms: blast freezers require more powerful refrigeration systems in order to freezer chilled and ambient products quicker than a pull down freezer

As a standard, walk-in freezers maintain negative temperatures between -1 and -40°C and this is recommended for the majority of walk-in freezer applications.
However, this is dependent on the products you store and the industry you are in, as many will need to adhere to more specific requirements.
To find out more about configuring your walk-in freezer to a suitable temperature range for your business, contact the MTCSS team to discuss this further!
Absolutely! It isn’t a requirement for you to have a business in order for you to invest in any temperature-controlled storage.
If you have an idea of where you’d like your walk-in freezer to be installed, how much room you have to build your walk-in freezer, and what you’re intending to store in there then our team can design a walk-in freezer that’s bespoke to you.
We would need to understand your exact requirements, and what you’re looking to achieve from your walk-in freezer to be able to offer you a price. This is because everyone has different requirements!
Your individual requirements will determine the additional components of your cold room, which is why it is hard to give an estimated figure for how much a walk-in freezer would cost.

The short answer to this question is yes.
Walk-in freezers must have a floor in order to avoid frost heave (the upwards swelling of moisture pockets on the floor of your walk-in freezer that contribute to an unsafe cold room), was well as making sure your walk-in freezer is optimally insulated for your products.
MTCSS is here to help – we can help you decide which type of cold room flooring would be most beneficial to your walk-in freezer.
The easiest way to keep your walk-in freezer maintained and in optimal working order is by investing in regular cold room maintenance.
Cold room maintenance will allow elements of your walk-in freezer to be replaced and cleaned, therefore improving the efficiency and overall safety of your freezer cold room.
Investing in cold room maintenance allows our team to intricately clean all elements of your cold room – including areas that would be neglected/easily missed.
Cold room condition reports from MTCSS can help you identify the parts of your walk-in freezer that could benefit from cold room maintenance. Learn about them here
The main health and safety risks in your cold room can be eliminated by ensuring your walk-in freezer is maintained regularly and that any broken elements are replaced swiftly.
However, the most common risk associated with walk-in freezers is getting trapped inside and ice build-up (an excess of ice on the crucial parts of your cold room, such as around your cold room door). Usually this occurs when your cold room door frame or handle is broken, preventing the cold room door from fully opening.
Due to the negative temperatures they maintain, getting stuck in a walk-in freezer (coupled with ice build-up) can become very dangerous very quickly. Read our article for more information
Bert De Mooij, Bespoke Chiller Cold Room for Q Flowers Ltd 2021
From coming into contact with MTCSS to the finished product, has been a great and easy process.
The members of the team listened to our wishes and offered us exactly what we needed. From picking the type of cooler machines, the doors, the lights - everything was exactly adjusted to our wishes.
Even though through the COVID period where availability of materials were challenging, the cold room was finished on the date as was planned when signing for the order.
Very professional company from start to finish.
Catherine Hester Fenwick, Ambient storage at Brabourne Wines 2021
‘Brabourne Wine is a small, family run vineyard in Kent. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Conservation Area and with listed buildings, we needed to find a solution to store our wine without building afresh or making any material differences to the current buildings. MTCSS were amazingly flexible. They worked with us to develop a solution that fitted inside one of our outbuildings. Given the limitations on space and the requirement to have racking suitable for pallets, virtually everything about the project had to be bespoke but Darren never lost patience with the endless queries in the planning phase. Once on site, the team was professional, friendly, flexible and quick. They have delivered a solution which is perfect for our needs and exceeds our expectations. We are at the smaller end of their usual customer base, but we were never made to feel as though we were any less important than a major supermarket chain. We would certainly recommend them to anybody needing a controlled climate for storage (or any other reason)’

Dual Compartment Cold Room Installation, London
From the beginning I found Gem’s customer service fantastic, out of all of the companies we spoke to for quotes she was the most responsive and attentive. Even when we were still finalising and it wasn’t confirmed if we were proceeding with MTCSS yet, she was always great with keeping in contact to see if we needed anything, and very responsive with emails, and also phone calls.
Andy and Nathan, have been great throughout the entire process. Both have been on hand for any queries we have had and very responsive again to all forms of communication. Everything has been handled promptly and efficiently both before, during and after the build. Any questions we have had they have always gotten back to us with an answer very quickly.
The gentlemen who completed the install here on site, where very friendly and mindful of business operations while completing work. Each day they would check in with who was here in the morning to explain what they would be doing, what access they required, and asked if and how this might affect our operations or customers. Again, they were very clear and open with communication and was happy to help find solutions when we had issues with the shelving.
Overall our experience with you has been very good and we have been left a happy customer. I would also just like to say a thank you to yourself Gem, Nathan and Andy as you have all been very great throughout our customer journey!
