What Defines A Walk-In Fridge?
A walk-in fridge is, simply put, a cold room which allows walk in access that maintains positive temperature of between +0 and +8 degrees– also known as a chiller cold room, chiller room, or walk-in chiller. Walk-in freezers, by contrast, maintain negative temperatures.
Walk-in fridges can come in two cold room constructions – bespoke or modular, which relates to the way the cold room panels are fitted together and sealed. But don’t worry about that if you aren’t sure what you need – our expert team are here to help!
Walk-in fridges are used for a wide range of application and industries including:
• Food and drink retail & manufacturing
• Food preparation
• Fruit and vegetable produce
• Pharmaceutical storage
• Distribution and wholesale
• Hotels, restaurants and pubs
• Farm shops and garden centres
• Butchers and bakeries
• and the list goes on!

Frequently Asked Questions
A walk-in fridge is a temperature-controlled room, suitable for temperature ranges between +0 and +8°C, and has a range of industry uses depending on your business and the processes you’re trying to achieve.
Whether you’re storing or preparing your products, walk-in fridges can be used for a range of applications and are available in a selection of sizes with customisable elements depending on your unique requirements.
A walk-in fridge is a cold room made from insulated panels that maintain a positive internal temperature between +0 and +8°C, created by the refrigeration system.
Both the cold room panels and refrigeration system work together to keep your walk-in fridge at the consistent temperature. The temperature that your walk-in fridge maintains will be bespoke to you, and dependent on what you’re storing.
Your cold room door also plays a huge role in insulating and maintaining the temperature of your walk-in fridge too, so you must ensure you have the correct applications for your requirements.
Your walk-in fridge must maintain a temperature range between +0 and +8°C for it to be classified as a walk-in fridge. If its temperature doesn’t fall within these parameters, you’re moving towards frozen or ambient temperatures which could cause product spoilage.
The exact temperature your walk-in fridge will be maintaining will depend on your specifications and product requirements.
You may want to store your fresh poultry at +3°C, or you might need to store your pharmaceuticals at +6°C – no matter your requirements, MTCSS have a temperature-controlled system that’s the perfect accompaniment for your cold room.
There are various ways that you can maintain your walk-in fridges. One of the easiest ways to maintain, and prolong the lifespan, of your walk-in fridge is through cold room refurbishment and maintenance.
We can refurbish an array of elements in your walk-in cold rooms – read our blog for more information
However you can also maintain your walk-in fridges by ensuring that the temperature range is correct, checking all elements are fully functioning (and if not, replacing these as soon as they occur) and keeping on top of cleaning your walk-in fridge regularly.
Essentially, you can have a walk-in fridge installed wherever suits you best. However, there are a few anomalies.
The majority of walk-in cold rooms are installed inside, however if the most ideal place for your walk-in fridge is outside, then we can adhere to these requirements!
If you required your walk-in fridge to be external, then there are extra parameters that we would need to factor into your cold room design, such as an external weatherproof roof and cold room panels.
Additionally, if you require your cold room to be installed on a second floor (as opposed to the ground) then you must factor in that you must have a floor – regardless of whether it’s a walk-in fridge, freezer or ambient area.
MTCSS can adhere to most sizes and shapes of cold rooms, depending on what you’re looking for. If you require a walk-in fridge that isn’t a typical square or rectangle shape, MTCSS can design a bespoke walk-in fridge for you to suit your design!
The size parameters for a walk-in fridge span from 2m by 2m, all the way up to 20m by 20m – however, this isn’t the size limit for walk-in fridges.
You should also note that if you require a large walk-in fridge, you may require ceiling suspension to support this. If you’d like a quotation for a walk-in fridge, or would like to discuss your requirements, contact our expert team today!
Yes! A walk-in fridge combined with a walk-in freezer can be achieved through a dual (or multi) compartment room!
A dual compartment room is one cold room unit that is divided into two (or more) compartments by partition walls made from insulated cold room panels. This partition wall allows for various temperature ranges within each compartment – meaning you could have a walk-in fridge on one side and a walk-in freezer on the other!

Bert De Mooij, Bespoke Chiller Cold Room for Q Flowers Ltd 2021
From coming into contact with MTCSS to the finished product, has been a great and easy process.
The members of the team listened to our wishes and offered us exactly what we needed. From picking the type of cooler machines, the doors, the lights - everything was exactly adjusted to our wishes.
Even though through the COVID period where availability of materials were challenging, the cold room was finished on the date as was planned when signing for the order.
Very professional company from start to finish.
Catherine Hester Fenwick, Ambient storage at Brabourne Wines 2021
‘Brabourne Wine is a small, family run vineyard in Kent. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Conservation Area and with listed buildings, we needed to find a solution to store our wine without building afresh or making any material differences to the current buildings. MTCSS were amazingly flexible. They worked with us to develop a solution that fitted inside one of our outbuildings. Given the limitations on space and the requirement to have racking suitable for pallets, virtually everything about the project had to be bespoke but Darren never lost patience with the endless queries in the planning phase. Once on site, the team was professional, friendly, flexible and quick. They have delivered a solution which is perfect for our needs and exceeds our expectations. We are at the smaller end of their usual customer base, but we were never made to feel as though we were any less important than a major supermarket chain. We would certainly recommend them to anybody needing a controlled climate for storage (or any other reason)’

Dual Compartment Cold Room Installation, London
From the beginning I found Gem’s customer service fantastic, out of all of the companies we spoke to for quotes she was the most responsive and attentive. Even when we were still finalising and it wasn’t confirmed if we were proceeding with MTCSS yet, she was always great with keeping in contact to see if we needed anything, and very responsive with emails, and also phone calls.
Andy and Nathan, have been great throughout the entire process. Both have been on hand for any queries we have had and very responsive again to all forms of communication. Everything has been handled promptly and efficiently both before, during and after the build. Any questions we have had they have always gotten back to us with an answer very quickly.
The gentlemen who completed the install here on site, where very friendly and mindful of business operations while completing work. Each day they would check in with who was here in the morning to explain what they would be doing, what access they required, and asked if and how this might affect our operations or customers. Again, they were very clear and open with communication and was happy to help find solutions when we had issues with the shelving.
Overall our experience with you has been very good and we have been left a happy customer. I would also just like to say a thank you to yourself Gem, Nathan and Andy as you have all been very great throughout our customer journey!
