Building A Cold Room

To design and install a cold room that’s suited specification, you need to know about the different components that might be required in your cold room installation.

The more information you can give to your contractor when designing a cold room, the better. However, with a multitude of cold room components, understanding which ones form a cold room can be difficult.

Let’s explore these cold room components further…

Components for Cold Room Installation

Installation of your cold room will begin with the structure – cold room panels, walls and flooring. After the structure is installed, supporting components such as cold room doors and refrigeration systems will be installed to complete your cold room.

Here are the 5 main components for a cold room installation:

Cold Room Flooring

Cold room flooring solutions may seem confusing, but they are relatively simple. You should first decide whether you require a cold room floor – typically, you require a cold room floor for freezer cold rooms or cold rooms that don’t have an even base to build upon.

The different types of cold room flooring available from MTCSS includes:

  • Insulated floor with hexafloor finish
  • Insulated floor with plywood & overlay
  • Altro flooring
  • Resin flooring
  • Granolithic flooring

Cold Room Panels

Cold room panels form your cold room walls and ceilings – they are designed to guarantee high technical performance for your temperature-controlled environments.

Because they contribute towards the insulation levels in your cold room, it’s important that you choose the correct panels for your application – if the insulation in your cold room is sub-par, this could have a drastic effect on your products.

Our 80mm cold room panels are suitable for walk-in chillers with temperatures between +0°C and +8°C, and our 100mm cold room panels are suitable for walk-in freezers/freezer cold rooms with temperatures between +0°C and -40°C.

However, there are more panel thicknesses available depending on your requirements!

Cold Room Doors

Cold room doors are critical – a poorly selected cold room door could result in an inefficiently running cold room and affect the quality of your products due to temperature fluctuations.

Selecting the best cold room door for your business will depend on your application and requirements. MTCSS’ cold room door range includes:

  • Hinged cold room doors – suitable for chiller and freezer cold rooms down to -45°C
  • Sliding cold room doors – suitable for chiller and freezer cold rooms down to -45°C
  • Personnel (semi-insulated) doors – suitable for areas that maintain positive temperatures
  • High-speed doors – Suitable for a range of temperature-controlled areas

Refrigeration Systems

Refrigeration systems are used to achieve specific temperature parameters, depending on what your cold room is being used for. Ensuring you have chosen the best refrigeration system for your business is essential, as you don’t want your products being ruined due to a poorly selected refrigeration system!

The two types of refrigeration systems MTCSS provide are:

Monoblock Refrigeration Systems – Refrigeration units that fit though the wall (through wall) or through the ceiling (straddle) in your cold rooms and are suited to either chiller or freezer applications to support your bespoke product requirements.

Split Refrigeration Systems – A refrigeration system comprised of two units: a condenser that sits external to your cold room, and an evaporator that sits within your cold room to achieve your desired temperature.
