Insulated Panel Fire Ratings And Resistance For Cold Rooms

There can be various reasons that cold room panels and temperature-controlled rooms require fire resistance or fire ratings. From building regulations to product protection, MTCSS can supply and install cold room panels with fire resistance from 30 minutes to 4 hours dependent on your individual requirements.

Insulated Panels for Cold Rooms and Temperature-Controlled Rooms

Cold room panels (also referred to as insulated panels) are used to build cold rooms and temperature-controlled rooms. But they can also be used to create areas such as office spaces, changing areas, and more.

Different thicknesses of cold room panels have different insulating properties, so these need to be selected to suit your application:

  • Walk-in fridges (also known as chiller cold rooms) are commonly built with 80mm cold room panels to provide optimal insulation
  • Walk-in freezers (or freezer cold rooms) are often built with 100mm thick cold room panels and above, dependent on how low the temperature is
  • Non-temperature-controlled rooms can be built from 50mm panel as they don’t need to maintain internal temperatures

But cold room panels can offer more than optimal insulation. They are can also be selected with fire resistant and fire rated properties.

Cold Room Panel Fire Resistance and Rating

IPN cold room panels can offer fire resistance with panels over 100mm thickness – with panels available from 50mm thickness to 220mm thickness. However, to achieve the fire rating they must be installed according to manufacturer’s guidelines.

When cold room panels over 100mm thickness are used to build cold rooms and temperature-controlled rooms, they can meet the following:

The external and internal faces of the panel to be Class 0 in accordance with the Building Regulations when tested to BS 476: Part 6: 2009 and Part 7: 1997.

The QuadCore hybrid insulation core system has passed all the requirements of:

– FM 4882 for smoke sensitive occupancies: Class 1 for interior walls and ceiling, unlimited height;
– LPS 1181: 2014: Part 1: Issue 1.2, series of fire growth tests for LPCB approval and is certified to LPS 1181 Grade EXT-B*;
– LPS 1181: 2005: Part 2: Issue 2.0, series of fire growth tests for LPCB approval and listing of construction product systems to LPS 1181: INT-3, INT-2;
– LPS 1208: 2014: Issue 2.2, LPCB fire resistance requirements for elements of construction used to provide compartmentation and achieve periods of fire resistance FR30 & FR60;
– FM approval to FMRC 4880, 4881 Class 1 fire classification, unlimited height;
– Reaction to fire classification

IPN cold room panels can be used for both external and internal applications, offering between 30 minute and 90 minute fire resistance.

MTCSS can offer cold room panels and fire rated panels with a fire rating from 90 minutes to 4 hours for walls and ceilings – but these can only be used internally. Both fire resistance and fire rated panel systems must be installed in a specific manner to coincide with the manufacturer’s guidelines and regulations to achieve fire ratings and warranties.

Fire resistant and fire rated cold rooms are required in a wide range of industries and applications. They can be required due to building regulations, industry requirements, to protect products, and more. MTCSS can supply and install cold rooms and temperature-controlled rooms to offer fire ratings according to your specific requirements.
