Chiller Cold Room & Ambient Room for Pharmaceutical Storage
Dual Compartment Temperature-Controlled Rooms for Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceutical products must be stored at specific temperatures to protect their integrity. Therefore, choosing a cold room company you can trust to design and build pharmaceutical temperature-controlled rooms to ensure there is minimal fluctuation of internal conditions is vital – this is where MTCSS comes in.
One of our clients required a temperature-controlled solution to enable them to store pharmaceutical products at two different temperatures – +20Deg C and +4Deg C. MTCSS proposed a dual compartment cold room with a chiller cold room compartment and an ambient temperature-controlled compartment.
Chiller Cold Room
The chiller cold room compartment – also referred to as a walk-in fridge – was 9m x 13m x 5m with a 566m³ capacity. The cold room had two access points: one 3m x 3m sliding cold room door for pallet access, and one hinged cold room door for personnel and emergency access / egress.
The chiller cold room maintained temperatures of +4°C with a maximum fluctuation of 2°C either side. The MTCSS team designed and installed four split refrigeration systems, ensuring enough duty to refrigerate the cold room, and offering 100% back up in the event of a unit failure.
The refrigeration systems were linked via a switch-over panel, meaning they would switch over working to refrigerate the room for even use across the units. To adhere to F-gas regulations and to reduce environmental impact, the refrigeration systems used R449A which have a GWP of 1397 – a 64% reduction compared to the previously used R404A.

Ambient Temperature-Controlled Room
The ambient temperature-controlled compartment was 13m x 13m x 5m with a capacity of 842m³. The ambient compartment was also fitted with the same sliding cold room door and insulated hinged door as the chiller compartment.
Similarly to the chiller cold room, the air conditioning system was installed to maintain the temperature of +20°C, with a maximum fluctuation of 2°C either side, and was also installed with a switch-over panel for even wear.
Cold Room Panels
The dual compartment cold room was designed and built from quadcore hybrid insulation cold room panels – the wall panels were 100mm thickness and ceiling 125mm thickness due to the span of the cold room.
The cold room panels selected can achieve a Green Guide A+ rating as per the BRE Global “The Green Guide to Specification”.
On cold room panels 100mm thickness and above (as used in this project) the panels are specified to:
• LPCB certified to LPS 1208: Wall & Ceilings
• FM Approved to FMRC 4880, 4881, 4882 Class 1 Fire Classification
Cold Room Doors
MTCSS supplied and installed four cold room doors in total – two sliding cold room doors and two hinged cold rooms. The cold room doors selected were designed specifically for cold and chilled storage applications and offer the benefits of withstanding high pressure washing and regular cleaning.

Cold Room Lighting
Both compartments of the cold room were fitted with Chil-LED lighting – specifically designed for temperature-controlled rooms to reduce heat gain – and emergency lighting for safety and accessibility.
MTCSS successfully completed the project within the required deadlines, supplying and installing the dual compartment cold room to the client’s timelines and requirements. Bert De Mooij, Bespoke Chiller Cold Room for Q Flowers Ltd 2021
From coming into contact with MTCSS to the finished product, has been a great and easy process.
The members of the team listened to our wishes and offered us exactly what we needed. From picking the type of cooler machines, the doors, the lights - everything was exactly adjusted to our wishes.
Even though through the COVID period where availability of materials were challenging, the cold room was finished on the date as was planned when signing for the order.
Very professional company from start to finish.
Catherine Hester Fenwick, Ambient storage at Brabourne Wines 2021
‘Brabourne Wine is a small, family run vineyard in Kent. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Conservation Area and with listed buildings, we needed to find a solution to store our wine without building afresh or making any material differences to the current buildings. MTCSS were amazingly flexible. They worked with us to develop a solution that fitted inside one of our outbuildings. Given the limitations on space and the requirement to have racking suitable for pallets, virtually everything about the project had to be bespoke but Darren never lost patience with the endless queries in the planning phase. Once on site, the team was professional, friendly, flexible and quick. They have delivered a solution which is perfect for our needs and exceeds our expectations. We are at the smaller end of their usual customer base, but we were never made to feel as though we were any less important than a major supermarket chain. We would certainly recommend them to anybody needing a controlled climate for storage (or any other reason)’

Dual Compartment Cold Room Installation, London
From the beginning I found Gem’s customer service fantastic, out of all of the companies we spoke to for quotes she was the most responsive and attentive. Even when we were still finalising and it wasn’t confirmed if we were proceeding with MTCSS yet, she was always great with keeping in contact to see if we needed anything, and very responsive with emails, and also phone calls.
Andy and Nathan, have been great throughout the entire process. Both have been on hand for any queries we have had and very responsive again to all forms of communication. Everything has been handled promptly and efficiently both before, during and after the build. Any questions we have had they have always gotten back to us with an answer very quickly.
The gentlemen who completed the install here on site, where very friendly and mindful of business operations while completing work. Each day they would check in with who was here in the morning to explain what they would be doing, what access they required, and asked if and how this might affect our operations or customers. Again, they were very clear and open with communication and was happy to help find solutions when we had issues with the shelving.
Overall our experience with you has been very good and we have been left a happy customer. I would also just like to say a thank you to yourself Gem, Nathan and Andy as you have all been very great throughout our customer journey!
