Cold Room Panel Systems for Cheese Making Facility Expansion

MTCSS are experts when it comes to all things temperature controlled – including panel systems. We offer a range of cold room panelling systems, including insulated cold room panels and fire rated panels – or a combination of both.

An artisanal cheese maker required a range of new cold rooms, consisting of various cold rooms panels, to expand their cheese making processes. MTCSS worked with Optimum Flooring Solutions to design and a build a solution at their site in Somerset.

The team at the cheese making facility were planning for their growth and expansion for the future and the upcoming years – phasing their cold room and ambient room projects to expand their facilities over time.

Their new cold rooms and ambient areas were located outside, under the cover of a roof with exposed sides. Due to the exposure to the elements and attachment to an existing building, the MTCSS team had to design the rooms with cold room panels of varying specifications.

Part one of the project consisted of four main rooms; one dry goods store, one boxing room, one wrapping / packing room, and one brining room.

Cold Room Panels & Fire Rated Panel Systems

Each room had external perimeter walls built from 150mm IPN Kingspan Quadcore cold room panels; the internal walls built from 100mm Eurobond Firemaster panels; and the ceilings built from 100mm IPN Kingspan Quadcore cold room panels.

The 100mm Firemaster panel used to build the internal walls were 60 minute fire rated, offering LPS 1208. This was required for compliance with building regulations, as the cold rooms formed a brand-new building, connected to an existing building.

The existing roof had a vaulted ceiling, so we designed our cold rooms and ambient rooms with 100m IPN panels to follow the vaulted ceiling in order to make the most of the space available. The external walls were also designed with IPN cold room panels, in 150mm thickness – this was to improve fire resistance and to help withstand external conditions. The cold room panels were customised to be RAL grey externally and white internally upon the customer’s request.

Cold Room Flooring

Optimum Flooring Services selected and designed the cold room flooring to suit the bespoke requirements of the customer, and to ensure it was suitable for the range of uses within the cold rooms and ambient rooms.

A resin floor was installed across all compartments within the various rooms – the flooring was selected as it ticked all the requirements of the customer. Resin floor is chemical resistant, impact resistant and slip resistant, as well as easy to clean, ensuring it would withstand the processes of the cheese facilities.
