Refrigeration Systems for Walk-In Fridges & Temperature Control for Ambient Areas

When it comes to acquiring a new warehouse or unit for your business, work may need to be carried out to make it fit for purpose. This is particularly the case when it comes to cold rooms. Cold rooms and temperature-controlled rooms need to be designed to your exact requirements and the exact requirements of the products you’re storing.

MTCSS can help transform your newly acquired, existing cold rooms or ambient areas, into the perfect cold storage solution to suit your application and specification.

One of MTCSS’ customers purchased a unit with existing cold rooms, walk-in fridges and ambient rooms. The unit was originally used to store and process potatoes, but the new planned usage was to store pharmaceutical products. The existing refrigeration systems installed in the cold rooms were too old and needed replacing to meet the latest industry standards.

Removing The Existing Refrigeration Systems

The first step in replacing the cold room refrigeration units and temperature control was to remove the existing refrigeration systems and engineering. The MTCSS team de-commissioned the existing refrigeration systems and temperature control, and removed all the services, dropped the evaporators and disconnected all the interconnecting electrics.

The process of decommissioning the units, is to pump down the existing systems, then used a recovery unit to pull the refrigerant out of the systems into the appropriate recovery bottles. The gas needs to be weighed into the bottles to make sure they’re not over filled. Once all the gas has been removed, you then siphon out the oil from the reservoir into suitable containers.

This then gets sent to a processing facility, who clean the gas so it can be re-used, and the oil correctly disposed of. This process is important due to the impact that refrigerants have on the environment and some refrigerants can be flammable.

Installing New Refrigeration Systems & Ambient Temperature Control

The unit consisted of a chiller cold room, maintaining positive temperatures; an ambient room with temperature control and a small ambient room with temperature control. Each refrigeration system required 100% back up refrigeration – so in the event of unit failure the pharmaceutical products would be consistently protected.

Chiller Cold Room Refrigeration Systems

The new refrigeration systems in the chiller cold room needed to maintain temperatures of +4°C, with the pharmaceutical products entering the cold room at +8°C and exiting the cold room +4°C.

The MTCSS team installed 4no evaporators and 4no condensing units – the 100% back up system meant 2no units would be working at once and would switch over to ensure consistent wear.

The refrigerant used was R449A – this refrigerant has a low GWP (1397), meaning its impact on the environment is minimal, and is an ideal refrigerant for long-term usage. R449A has a GWP 64% lower than R404A (this was go-to refrigerant for a number of years, however it is now being phased out due to its poor GWP) making it a more sustainable solution.

It has an A1 safety class, meaning it is non-flammable and has lower indirect emissions and operating costs compared to R404A.

Ambient Temperature Control Engineering

The new temperature control for the ambient rooms both needed to maintain temperatures of +20°C, with the products entering the ambient room at +24°C and exiting the cold room at +20°C.

The larger ambient room had 8no wall mounted units installed, with 4no units running at once and switching over to ensure even usage. The smaller ambient room was installed with 2no cassettes, with 1no unit running at once.

100% Back-Up Systems

The refrigeration systems and ambient temperature control for both the cold room and ambient rooms required 100% back up systems. The rooms had 6no auto-changeover panels installed to manage the back-up systems – these systems switch over every 10 days to ensure even wear across the units. In event of system failure, the panel will switch to the standby units.

The rooms were also installed with door open alarms to ensure if the doors to the cold rooms or ambient rooms were left open for an extended period, the alarm would sound. This helps to maintain the internal temperatures and to reduce the loss of cooled air.

Cold Room Lighting

In addition to refrigeration systems and ambient engineering, MTCSS installed a range of cold room lighting. We selected Olivewood LED cold room lighting to reduce the risk of lighting emanating heat in the room and therefore forcing the refrigeration systems to work harder to maintain internal temperatures.

The MTCSS team installed: 35no Olivewood LED lights, 11no Olivewood emergency lights and 4no exit bulkhead lights.

MTCSS can transform existing cold rooms and ambient rooms which are not fit for purpose, into cold storage solutions which are designed to the exact requirements of your business and industry.

Whether your existing temperature-controlled rooms need to be refurbished, or they need entirely new refrigeration systems – MTCSS has the answer to your problem.
