Cold Rooms for St Peter’s Catholic High School
Dual Compartment Cold Room for School in Gloucester
MTCSS understands the importance of having a high-quality, efficiently running temperature-controlled solution. This is why we offer new cold room installations, as well as disposing of your existing cold rooms!
At MTCSS, we use high-quality materials so you can rest assured knowing your cold room will efficiently insulate, refrigerate and protect your products AND stand the test of time.
A new customer in Gloucester contacted us to see whether we could dispose of their existing dual compartment cold room and replace it with a new, larger cold room. And that’s exactly what we did!
St Peter’s Catholic High School is a student-centred school, who are focused on inspiring, stimulating and challenging their children. Striving to develop confident and happy students who can prosper, St Peter’s School prepares its students for the future and do so within a safe learning environment.
Their existing cold room was over 10 years old and they were beginning to outgrow it – as a result, they had to increase the stock levels in their existing cold room. This had a direct negative impact on the cold room’s efficiency by limiting the airflow within the cold room. The limited airflow meant that not all food products were being correctly cooled, forcing the refrigeration units to run longer and harder in order to achieve the desired temperature – increasing the running costs over a long period of time.
The MTCSS team visited St Peter’s Catholic High School to conduct a survey. As originally requested by St Peter’s School, the team confirmed that the existing dual compartment cold room and refrigeration would need to be removed and replaced.
We began drawing up plans to install a larger dual compartment chiller and freezer cold room for the school. A dual compartment cold room is ideal if you need to store different products at different temperatures, but don’t have the space requirements for two separate cold rooms.
MTCSS began the process of dismantling and disposing of the existing cold rooms during the summer holidays to minimise disruption.
After de-commissioning the existing refrigeration systems and disconnecting all the pipework, we were able to dismantle the existing cold rooms and begin building the new temperature-controlled rooms.
The first phase of the process was to install the new cold room flooring:
• We laid the white food safe channels to create a base for the cold room panels and fixed them to the existing floor
• We inserted cold room floor panels into the channel, as well as inserting the cold room wall panels to create the cold room’s perimeter
• The team fitted plywood base panels inside, and cut to size, ready to be foamed and sealed in
• Installed the five-bar overlay on top of the base panels, then sealed and trimmed ready for personnel usage – the overlay was installed to prevent any damage to the floor, as well as reinforcing the floor for trolley access
The cold room was built with MTCSS’ PIR cold room panels to form the dual compartment cold room. This guaranteed maximum thermal insulation, a high humidity and condensation barrier and the best class of fire resistance. MTCSS’ cold room panels are the perfect solution for environments storing food and drinks products – their finish means they are more hygienic, food-safe, and easy to clean.
The MTCSS team installed chrome wire shelving within the freezer cold room compartment – allowing them to keep on top of their stock levels and increase the longevity of their products, as a result of being stored correctly under the correct maintained temperature.
For personnel and trolley access in and out for the cold rooms – we installed two MTH hinged cold room doors; one suitable for a chilled environment and one for a frozen environment.
To maintain the required temperatures, our team supplied and installed two split refrigeration systems with evaporators and condensing units. The cold room was split into two compartments, each with their own refrigeration system; one to maintain a chilled environment of 0 degrees and the other a frozen environment of –20 degrees.
This made our dual compartment cold room the perfect option for St Peter’s School to be able to efficiently store all their food stock – regardless of whether it’s frozen or refrigerated.
After we had mechanically and electrically fitted both refrigeration systems, we were able to complete the final checks and commission the refrigerant gases before we unveiled the new chiller and freezer cold room to the school.
St Peter’s Catholic High School were very satisfied with their completed project, and our team were able to meet the deadlines of the summer holidays perfectly to ensure it didn’t disrupt the school term.
As part of our processes, we provided St Peter’s School with an operation and maintenance guide for them to follow, to reduce the amount of cleaning/repairs that may need to take place overtime. In addition to extending the lifespan of the cold rooms and refrigeration units.
MTCSS design and install bespoke cold rooms, including hinged and sliding cold room doors, flooring, refrigeration, lighting, shelving, and other ancillaries. Our team will work with you to develop a cold storage solution to benefit your business and its processes.
Whatever your requirements, you can be assured that MTCSS will manage every element of installation and will work with you to design the best temperature-controlled solution for your business.

Bert De Mooij, Bespoke Chiller Cold Room for Q Flowers Ltd 2021
From coming into contact with MTCSS to the finished product, has been a great and easy process.
The members of the team listened to our wishes and offered us exactly what we needed. From picking the type of cooler machines, the doors, the lights - everything was exactly adjusted to our wishes.
Even though through the COVID period where availability of materials were challenging, the cold room was finished on the date as was planned when signing for the order.
Very professional company from start to finish.
Catherine Hester Fenwick, Ambient storage at Brabourne Wines 2021
‘Brabourne Wine is a small, family run vineyard in Kent. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Conservation Area and with listed buildings, we needed to find a solution to store our wine without building afresh or making any material differences to the current buildings. MTCSS were amazingly flexible. They worked with us to develop a solution that fitted inside one of our outbuildings. Given the limitations on space and the requirement to have racking suitable for pallets, virtually everything about the project had to be bespoke but Darren never lost patience with the endless queries in the planning phase. Once on site, the team was professional, friendly, flexible and quick. They have delivered a solution which is perfect for our needs and exceeds our expectations. We are at the smaller end of their usual customer base, but we were never made to feel as though we were any less important than a major supermarket chain. We would certainly recommend them to anybody needing a controlled climate for storage (or any other reason)’

Dual Compartment Cold Room Installation, London
From the beginning I found Gem’s customer service fantastic, out of all of the companies we spoke to for quotes she was the most responsive and attentive. Even when we were still finalising and it wasn’t confirmed if we were proceeding with MTCSS yet, she was always great with keeping in contact to see if we needed anything, and very responsive with emails, and also phone calls.
Andy and Nathan, have been great throughout the entire process. Both have been on hand for any queries we have had and very responsive again to all forms of communication. Everything has been handled promptly and efficiently both before, during and after the build. Any questions we have had they have always gotten back to us with an answer very quickly.
The gentlemen who completed the install here on site, where very friendly and mindful of business operations while completing work. Each day they would check in with who was here in the morning to explain what they would be doing, what access they required, and asked if and how this might affect our operations or customers. Again, they were very clear and open with communication and was happy to help find solutions when we had issues with the shelving.
Overall our experience with you has been very good and we have been left a happy customer. I would also just like to say a thank you to yourself Gem, Nathan and Andy as you have all been very great throughout our customer journey!
