Removal and Installation of Pharmaceutical Cold Rooms
Pharmaceutical Cold Rooms for Biotechnology Company
Pharmaceutical and medical industries must adhere to strict regulations and procedures – so they require solutions that provide them with high levels of control over their products . This is exactly what MTCSS recently did for our customer in Nottingham – designed a bespoke cold room solution to suit their biotechnology business.
Cold Room Requirements
Our customer required the removal and disposal of their existing cold rooms, as well as the installation of two new cold rooms that were suitable for their pharmaceutical processes.
Because they were a biotechnology company, our team took into consideration the in depth specifications of the industry. MTCSS conducted a site survey prior to designing our customer’s cold room solution, to ensure we understood the works required and to plan the project in detail.
MTCSS Cold Room Solution
MTCSS designed a dual compartment cold room that streamlined their requirements for two chiller cold rooms whilst maximising their space.
Before installing the new cold rooms, the MTCSS team had to dismantle, remove ,and dispose of the existing cold rooms in line with legislation. Both of the new cold rooms were walk-in chiller compartments, with a volume of 11m3 each and maintained a temperature of 4°C to adhere to their product requirements.
Cold Room Panel Systems
The 100mm cold room panel systems were chosen to conserve energy (as instructed by our customer) and were constructed from thermally efficient Kingspan Quadcore IPN cold room panels.
Cold Room Doors
MTCSS installed two hinged chiller cold room doors onto the cold room panels – one door was installed on each part of the dual compartment cold room. Both of the cold room doors had a handle on the inside of the door, as well as the outside, as a safety feature in case of an emergency.
Refrigeration Systems
MTCSS installed a split refrigeration system for our customer with the refrigerant R448A, which has a GWP (global warming potential) of 1387 and 0 ODP (ozone depletion potential). This refrigerant had less of an impact on the environment following their refrigeration systems being commissioned – aligning with our customer’s requirement to reduce their impact on the environment.
To ensure high levels of control, there was also a control panel provided to allow our customers greater control over their refrigeration and lighting solutions.
Customisable Cold Room Elements
Because our customers were storing their pharmaceutical products in glass vials, we provided them with suitable racking solutions – we installed three shelving units in each chiller cold room compartment that were covered in an antibacterial epoxy coating with a 10-year anti-microbial guarantee to prevent any contamination.
In addition to relocating and reconnecting our customers’ data loggers (used to measure several of the cold room’s parameters) from the existing cold rooms to the new cold rooms to ensure continuity with their pharmaceutical requirements.
The MTCSS team also installed trolley plates to the cold room walls, both internally and externally, to prevent any potential impact damage from pallet trucks.
The cold room was designed with LED lighting solutions, selected to avoid increase in internal temperature from heat gain, and we fitted an emergency light for safety.

Bert De Mooij, Bespoke Chiller Cold Room for Q Flowers Ltd 2021
From coming into contact with MTCSS to the finished product, has been a great and easy process.
The members of the team listened to our wishes and offered us exactly what we needed. From picking the type of cooler machines, the doors, the lights - everything was exactly adjusted to our wishes.
Even though through the COVID period where availability of materials were challenging, the cold room was finished on the date as was planned when signing for the order.
Very professional company from start to finish.
Catherine Hester Fenwick, Ambient storage at Brabourne Wines 2021
‘Brabourne Wine is a small, family run vineyard in Kent. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Conservation Area and with listed buildings, we needed to find a solution to store our wine without building afresh or making any material differences to the current buildings. MTCSS were amazingly flexible. They worked with us to develop a solution that fitted inside one of our outbuildings. Given the limitations on space and the requirement to have racking suitable for pallets, virtually everything about the project had to be bespoke but Darren never lost patience with the endless queries in the planning phase. Once on site, the team was professional, friendly, flexible and quick. They have delivered a solution which is perfect for our needs and exceeds our expectations. We are at the smaller end of their usual customer base, but we were never made to feel as though we were any less important than a major supermarket chain. We would certainly recommend them to anybody needing a controlled climate for storage (or any other reason)’

Dual Compartment Cold Room Installation, London
From the beginning I found Gem’s customer service fantastic, out of all of the companies we spoke to for quotes she was the most responsive and attentive. Even when we were still finalising and it wasn’t confirmed if we were proceeding with MTCSS yet, she was always great with keeping in contact to see if we needed anything, and very responsive with emails, and also phone calls.
Andy and Nathan, have been great throughout the entire process. Both have been on hand for any queries we have had and very responsive again to all forms of communication. Everything has been handled promptly and efficiently both before, during and after the build. Any questions we have had they have always gotten back to us with an answer very quickly.
The gentlemen who completed the install here on site, where very friendly and mindful of business operations while completing work. Each day they would check in with who was here in the morning to explain what they would be doing, what access they required, and asked if and how this might affect our operations or customers. Again, they were very clear and open with communication and was happy to help find solutions when we had issues with the shelving.
Overall our experience with you has been very good and we have been left a happy customer. I would also just like to say a thank you to yourself Gem, Nathan and Andy as you have all been very great throughout our customer journey!
