Dual Compartment Cold Room with Display Window

Food and drink businesses are one of the industries that heavily rely on cold rooms and refrigeration all year round. A cold room can be the difference between providing fresh, high-quality products, or losing produce and revenue altogether due to poor storage. Cold storage solutions can also be used to display your products, not just in the form of refrigerated display cabinets, but in cold rooms too.

MTCSS recently designed and built a cold room with a display window for our customer in Hereford, a butcher that opened its doors in the 1950s, providing the highest quality meats and serving food in their café and deli – as well as food to go!

Our customer was looking for a solution to not only store their food products, but also to display them to the customers who visit their shop daily. MTCSS were able to design the perfect solution to optimise their temperature-controlled storage with a dual compartment cold room, and to show their meat produce off to the world.

Dual Compartment Cold Rooms

As the customer required both a walk-in fridge and a walk-in freezer to store food, but with minimal space available… a dual compartment cold room was the ideal solution. Maximising space with one cold room with a dividing wall formed from insulated panel, creating a chiller compartment and a freezer compartment.

Both cold room compartments were designed and built with an insulated floor with 5 bar aluminium overlay to offer optimal insulation and reduce slip-risks. The MTCSS team also fitted hinged cold room doors, manufactured by cold room door experts MTH, for access in and out of the cold rooms. MTH doors provide efficient sealing and optimal insulation to ensure the cold room would maintain internal temperatures.

The chiller cold room compartment also included a meat hanging rail with stainless steel hooks, to hang meat products and store them effectively within the cold room.

Cold Room Viewing Window

But, before the MTCSS team could begin the cold room installation process, we removed the existing insulated box and glass window that was used to display the butcher’s beef.

When MTCSS designed and installed the chiller cold room, our team included a 2450mm x 980mm viewing window with toughened glass to allow them to display the meat produce whilst storing it effectively.

Our team also supplied and installed cold room shelving for the chiller cold room compartment, to allow the customer to display their produce in the displaying window effectively and aesthetically.

Refrigeration Systems

In the walk-in freezer compartment, MTCSS installed split refrigeration systems, with an internal unit within the cold room and external unit outside of the building, to maintain the internal temperatures required. The refrigeration system utilised refrigerant R449A with a GWP of 1397 (65% lower than the previously and commonly used R404A), it is non-toxic, non-flammable and energy efficient.

In the walk-in fridge compartment, the MTCSS team fitted and commissioned a monoblock refrigeration unit supplied by the customer which was designed specifically for the process of dry aging meat.

So, cold rooms don’t just have to be in the back of your stores with your products hidden away – we can design cold rooms to display your products, whether that be food or flowers, and show off what your business can offer to your customers!
