What Is ISO 14644 Cleanroom Classification?

Cleanroom Doors | MTCSS

When it comes to cleanrooms, the classifications and regulations are vital to ensure it meets the stringent requirements of the industry. Dependent on the use of your cleanroom (from the processes and personnel to the products and chemicals) it will need to adhere to specific classifications.

The team at MTCSS can work with you to design and build a cleanroom to suit your exact requirements, and the requirements of industry and regulatory standards. But how do you know what standard cleanrooms need to meet?

Different cleanroom classifications

Cleanrooms have an array of classifications and industry standards that may need to be adhered to depending on your cleanrooms use. Cleanroom design encompasses the air distribution systems, temperature-control, humidity & pressure differentials and understanding the impact of equipment & personnel on cleanroom environments.

Cleanrooms classifications are dictated by the number and size of particles per volume of air. They are measured by the number of particles within one cubic meter of air.

Cleanroom standards FS 2093 and ISO 14644-1 require specific particle count measurements and calculations to classify the cleanliness level of the clean area.

What are ISO 14644-1 cleanroom standards?

ISO BS EN 14644-1 (which recently superseded British Standard 5295 in the UK) but what does this mean?

ISO 14644-1 specifies the decimal logarithm (a logarithm with base 10) of the number of particles 0.1 μm or larger permitted per cubic meter of air.

For example, an ISO class 5 cleanroom has at most 105 = 100,000 particles per m³. Ordinary room air is approximately ISO 9.

FED STD 209E has an equivalent classification to ISO 14644-1 as detailed in the table below. This classification draws parallels with ISO in that the lower the number the ‘cleaner’ the air. For example, ISO 3 equivalent to Class 1 has fewer particles per m³ compared to, ISO 8 equivalent to Class 100,000.
