Should I Buy Sliding Cold Stop Insulated Curtains or Non-Sliding Cold Stop Insulated Curtains?

You’ve decided to refurbish your cold room – but what should you change?

Doorways in and out of your cold room or walk-in freezer are the most important elements to consider. What could insulated curtains do for you?

The Problems With Cold Room Doors

Many older cold rooms are equipped with heavy doors designed to insulate against heat seeping in. These have their advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, a well-fitted door will do an excellent job of insulating. On the other, they can be cumbersome and require a large amount of space.

What’s more, each time a door opens, it creates a large gap in your cold room insulation. If your cold room sees a high volume of foot traffic, this can lead to increased running costs, as your machinery works extra hard to keep temperatures down.

Worse still, doors often become the weak spot of a cold room over time. With pressure building up each time the door opens or closes, eventually, the seal or other essential components can weaken or break completely.

Cold room door repairs are one of the most common reasons that engineers are called out.

Insulated Curtains vs. Cold Room Doors

You may think that a door offers greater insulation than a set of curtains – but that’s not necessarily true. When it comes to sustaining a constant ambient temperature, curtains can really help.

Each time someone enters the cold room, a gap is created in the insulation. With a heavy door, this is a very large gap. With curtains, it can be much smaller. This keeps running costs down, and can ultimately save on walk-in freezer repair costs.

Curtains are also a more user-friendly solution. The heavy doors of a cold room or walk-in freezer often require a lot of physical strength to operate, which may be difficult for some members of your workforce.

Insulated curtains are easier to open and close.

Sliding Curtains Or Non-Sliding Curtains?

First, it’s important to remember that we’re talking about insulated curtains. Unlike flimsy PVC strips, these are heavy-duty curtains that will keep your space insulated, cutting down on your energy bills.

Sliding curtains are particularly useful if workers are frequently coming in and out of your cold room, especially if they have carts or trolleys. However, they do require more space than non-sliding curtains, as you will need room to the side to slide them open.

Sliding curtains may have the edge when it comes to user-friendliness, but both types make a great addition to any cold room. Both are heavy and well-insulated, providing a cost-effective alternative to freezer doors in high-traffic cold rooms and freezers.
