What are the differences between modular cold rooms and bespoke cold rooms?
If you are looking for a new cold room, or a replacement cold room, you want to understand what type of walk in cold room would be best suited to your requirements.
Modular cold rooms and bespoke cold rooms are the two main types of walk-in cold rooms, both available as walk in fridge and freezers. But you may be wondering what the differences are and how that effects your decision. The MTCSS team are here to answer
Cold Room Size Options
The main difference between modular cold rooms and bespoke cold rooms are the size options available. Modular cold rooms are available in a specific range of sizes, so if you are looking for a very specific size for your walk-in fridge or freezer – a bespoke cold room may be the better option for you.
Modular cold rooms are better suited to small to medium capacity cold rooms, as opposed to larger scale cold rooms.
The Shape of your Walk-in Cold Room
Bespoke cold rooms can be built to any size AND any shape that you may require – we can even install cold room panels to your existing space and rooms to create a new walk-in cold room.
In contrast, modular cold rooms can only be built in set shapes, generally a four-sided room to form a square or rectangular footprint.
The Type of Cold Room Panel
Modular cold rooms and bespoke cold rooms are built from different types of cold room panels.
Modular cold rooms are formed from a cam-locked (interlocking) PUR insulated panel, which come in specific heights, thicknesses and sizes.
In contrast, bespoke cold rooms are designed and built from PIR cold room panels which can be customised to a wider range of heights – making them an ideal solution for larger cold rooms.
The cold room panels for both modular cold rooms and bespoke cold rooms are food safe and offer optimum insulation – so you can be assured it will stand the test of time!
Cold Room Construction
Different types of cold room panels mean different types of cold room construction. Modular cold rooms are considered easier to build because of their modular construction (hence the name!)
The cam-lock panel system means the cold room panels simply lock together and are fixed in place with a cam-lock key (similar to an Allen key). Whereas ‘standard’ cold room panels have a male / female joint system which needs to be sealed.
Overall, modular cold rooms and bespoke cold rooms both have their benefits depending on your cold storage requirements:
- Modular cold rooms are ideal for small to medium capacity cold rooms, whereas bespoke cold rooms are ideal for larger capacity cold rooms
- Modular cold rooms are ideal if you need an approximate size – if you need a very specific size then a bespoke cold room is better suited to the application
- If you want to build a cold room yourself, a modular cold room is your best option – but our team can give you information and guidance on how to build your modular cold room
- When your budget is a factor, and you’re looking for a smaller cold room, modular cold rooms are a good option – especially if you choose to install yourself!
