The Elements Of A Turnkey Cold Room Projects

Walk In Chillers, Walk In Freezers And Ambient Rooms

What your cold room is being used for will dictate what type of walk-in cold room you require. Simply put – if you need to store your products to be stored from +1 to +8 degrees, you will require a chiller cold room; if your products need to be stored at temperatures below freezing you will need a walk-in freezer; and if your products should be stored above +10 degrees, you will need an ambient solution.

What Are The Differences Between Chillers, Freezers And Ambient Areas?

Aside from the obvious temperature differences, temperature-controlled rooms will require different insulation properties dependent on the exact temperature you need to keep your products in optimal condition. For example, a freezer cold room will require higher insulation properties than a chiller cold room to ensure the colder internal temperatures are maintained.
To achieve the insulation required, different panel thicknesses are used, dependent on the room specifications and temperature ranges. MTCSS use food-safe, Quadcore panels for the installation of industrial and bespoke cold rooms.

Cold Room Doors And High-Speed Doors

Temperature controlled rooms, whether they are chilled, frozen or ambient, need a point of access. MTCSS offer a range of doors for all applications and specifications, including hinged and sliding cold room doors, personnel/service doors and insulated high speed doors.

What To Consider When Choosing A Cold Room Door:

• What Access Do You Require?

If you need pedestrian access to the temperature-controlled room, a hinged or sliding door is probably suitable. But if you require access from vehicles, such as forklifts, you will need a larger door, which is easier to open, to allow you to drive in and out of the cold room. High speed doors are ideal for applications which need larger access due to the sizes constraints and the automated door opening systems.

• How Often Will Your Door Be Open?

Access doors which are opened frequently, ideally need to be easy to open and quick to close to ensure the internal temperature is maintained constantly. Sliding doors can be easier to open and close than hinged cold room doors (especially when they are larger!) and can be fitted to be automatic sliding. High speed doors, which vertically, can be operated on a push button or pull cord, then close automatically after a specific period of time, or on a radar. This ensures your cold room doors aren’t left open for prolonged periods of time, therefore safeguarding your room’s temperature control.

Unsure what type of door will suit your application? That is why MTCSS are here. We can have you decide what type of door will be ideal for your temperature-controlled room and your budget.

Refrigeration And Lighting

Refrigeration is key to keeping your products at the correct temperature range – there are different refrigeration options available dependent on the temperatures and the size of room you require.

Monoblock Refrigeration Systems:

Monoblock refrigeration systems are integral to the cold room, sitting through the wall or roof, and are often referred to as ‘plug and play’ systems. These are suited to small capacity rooms and rooms which don’t require very specific temperature ranges e.g. chilled or frozen food storage.

Split Refrigeration Systems:

A bespoke built split refrigeration system is suitable for small to large capacity rooms. But instead of the whole system being part of the cold room, one unit (the evaporator) sits inside the cold room itself and the condensing unit sits externally outside the building, with pipework running from the cold room through the wall to the external unit.

Ambient Systems:

Ambient temperature control systems keep an area at a specific temperature range from +10 to +30 degrees. These systems are often used in prep areas for food and produce, or in areas that require consistent temperatures above 10 degrees.

At MTCSS we understand that keeping your products protected is of the utmost importance – that is why we can offer options such as 100% back up refrigeration and remote monitoring, to ensure that your refrigeration units have no downtime in the event of power loss or system failure.

The Process

MTCSS can handle every aspect of your cold storage project, combining elements and designing bespoke cold rooms for your specific application. But what is the process of getting your project underway?

• Your enquiry – no matter the level of information you have for your project, MTCSS are here to help. You may have drawings and specifications, or maybe you just have an idea of what you may want and need. MTCSS will talk through your project to understand your requirements, then offer a potential solution.

• Your quotation – most of the time, we are able to initially quote a project without visiting your site. We will then put together a quotation for your enquiry, submitting the quote and any further details you may require. We are happy to talk you through your quote via telephone or a video call, if you have any questions or need any further information.

• Survey – if you decide you would like to go ahead with the quote, we will then come to survey your site. This will ensure we have any measurements correct and we can check the access, space, and ensure we are prepared for any issues which may arise.

• Project plan and programme – dependent on the size of the project, we will then submit a plan with dates of installation and then get the project underway!

• Project installation – the MTCSS team will work on site to complete your project, adhering to health and safety guidelines and working to a strict timeline to guarantee deadline completion. Your assigned project manager will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

• Project completion – upon project completion, the installation will be signed off by MTCSS and you. Then we will submit O+M manuals for the project.

MTCSS can work as the main contractor on your project, overseeing every aspect of the installation of your temperature-controlled room, from the cold room to the refrigeration. We will ensure your cold room construction is carried out safely, efficiently and within the project’s deadlines.

We have extensive experience in every element of project planning and construction for cold storage – if you’d like to find out more about turnkey projects we have worked on, take a look at the case studies here!
