Modular cold rooms – can you install them yourself?
At MTCSS we understand that budget is at the forefront of a lot of business’ minds and keeping costs down is important with the current rising energy bills and other expenses.
Cold rooms can be vital to a business’ operation, but budget may be holding you back from upgrading your cold storage or investing in a new cold room. MTCSS may have an option for you.
What is a modular cold room?
Modular cold rooms differ from standard or bespoke cold rooms due to their construction. Modular cold rooms come in a specific range of sizes, in a range of panel thicknesses, heights and widths / depths. They are suitable for walk-in chillers, walk-in freezers and ambient rooms.
Because modular cold rooms come in a specific range of sizes, there is no requirement for cutting the cold room panels or making amendments – they come in size required, ready to build.
The cold room panels used for modular cold room construction also differ from bespoke cold rooms. Modular cold rooms utilise a cam-lock panel system, where the panel fits together and is locked in place with a cam-lock system to ensure optimal insulation.
This makes the construction process easier compared to a bespoke cold room which requires sealing.
Installing your own modular cold room
Because of the cold room construction of a modular type room, installation can be a lot quicker and easier – making them an ideal solution for self-installation.
Modular cold rooms require no cutting, no sealing and are delivered ready to be installed. Choosing this option can reduce costs on installation and labour if you are looking to install them yourself – the MTCSS team can provide installation guides and information to help you with this process.
The refrigeration system required to keep your walk-in cold room cold can be more complex when it comes to installation. Monoblock refrigeration systems (also known as plug-and-play systems) are considered easier to install, as they simply need to be fitted through the wall or ceiling of the cold room, then wired in.
Wiring in the refrigeration systems and lights requires the help of a qualified electrician to ensure they are configured safely.
Split refrigeration systems are more complex to install and generally require a refrigeration expert due to the use of the pipe runs and drainage systems.
If you are looking to install your own modular cold room, a monoblock refrigeration system is an easier option if this suits your application.
Of course, MTCSS can provide a full design and build service for your walk-in cold room, managing every aspect of your cold room project. But if you are looking for cold storage solution to lower costs and to install yourself – a modular cold room could be the answer.
