But why do funeral homes and morgues need to use cold rooms?
Chiller cold rooms and refrigerated rooms are a form of body preservation. It is an alternative to using chemicals to preserve bodies. Instead, they are stored in cold rooms which maintain a low temperature of around +2⁰C.
Refrigerating bodies helps to slow the decomposition processes and means they can be stored for longer when kept in the appropriate conditions.
Utilising chiller cold rooms for body preservation is a ‘greener’ method of storage. It means that when a body is buried, no chemicals are added to the earth once the body is decomposing.
Chiller cold rooms by MTCSS can maintain temperatures of between +2⁰C and +8⁰C with only a +/-1⁰C variability. Back-up refrigeration is also an option to ensure that in the event of a refrigeration unit failure or problem, then another unit will kick in so there is no downtime and any bodies stored will be protected from external conditions.
