Should I Insulate My Cold Room?

The importance of insulating your cold room

This summer has seen temperatures soar to record breaking highs across the UK. This can and will affect your cold storage solutions – especially those that are ineffectively insulated. Cold rooms with poor insulation can lead to a multitude of issues that you most likely want to avoid.

To answer the question ‘should I insulate my cold room simply – the answer is yes! A cold room without insulation is not fit for purpose if it is required to maintain specific temperature ranges for chilled and frozen storage.

There are different levels of insulation based on the temperatures the cold room maintains – for example a freezer cold room will require a greater cold room panel thickness to preserve the internal temperatures in comparison to a chiller cold room.

Cold room panel thickness varies from 60mm to 150mm and beyond to suit a variety of applications:

  • 60mm panel thickness – often used for ambient or non-temperature-controlled areas
  • 80mm panel thickness – generally used for chiller cold rooms maintaining temperatures between +1°C and +8°C
  • 100mm panel thickness generally used for freezer cold rooms between -1°C and -20°C, but can also be used for chillers if required
  • 125mm panel and above – used for deep freeze areas with temperatures lower than -20°C, or in some cases where a fire rating is required (dependent on the construction of the panel)

Cold room panels are not only used to build cold rooms – the name doesn’t give away the panel’s versatility! They can also be used to build offices, ambient spaces, garden rooms and more. You can find out more about cold room panel use here!

Ensuring your cold room is built with the correct cold room panel and correct insulation is key to keeping your products protected – especially during the rising temperatures of summer.  But what happens if your cold room isn’t insulated correctly?

Why should I insulate my cold room?

There a variety of reasons you should insulate your cold room including:

  • Maintaining the correct temperatures – ineffective insulation could mean your cold room doesn’t maintain the correct temperature. Meaning your products could be damaged or lost if temperatures rise due to poor insulation.
  • Energy efficiency if your cold room is poorly insulated, your refrigeration unit will have to work harder to keep your cold room cool. This can result in greater energy usage and therefore increased energy bills.
  • Fit for purpose – essentially, if your cold room doesn’t have the correct insulation, it is not fit for purpose. Meaning down the line it could result in increased costs, not only from energy usage, but for a cold room replacement.
