What Cold Room Solution Did Our Customer Require?

Our customer in Cambridgeshire approached us and requested for the cold room flooring in their freezer cold room to be replaced and refurbished. They were after a new cold room flooring solution due to their old flooring being damaged and causing a potential trip hazard due to the high levels of foot-traffic the walk-in freezer faces.

Not only will refurbishing your cold room improve its efficiency, it will also improve its appearance and ensure it is equipped and up to standard for any upcoming audits you may have!

MTCSS’ Cold Room Refurbishment Solution:

The first thing the MTCSS team did was conduct a site survey, to allow us to understand their requirements and measurements better, so that we could provide the best and most accurate service to them.

Following the site survey, we confirmed that the old freezer cold room (internal size of 3780mm x 2900mm) flooring would be removed and replaced with a new cold room flooring and heater mat. We also made the decision to fit a barrier around the interior wall panels, this was to prevent any further damage to the walk-in freezer.

Our customer’s cold room flooring needed to be replaced due to health and safety issues. Due to the high levels of foot traffic, their flooring needed to be replaced to ensure that no members of staff could injure themselves by tripping or falling.

By refurbishing their cold room flooring, they saw an increase in their general cold room safety levels, alongside their cold room efficiency – which can even lead to long-term energy savings as it means their cold room isn’t having to work overtime to maintain their temperatures!

The Freezer Cold Room Maintenance Works Carried Out:

To work alongside our customer and their business requirements, we had a 2-week duration period to fully complete the works. This is because there was a temporary cold room delivered to allow us to empty and switch-off the original freezer cold room, perform the maintenance works and then bring it back down to the required temperature.

MTCSS started the cold room refurbishment by removing the old, damaged altro flooring, the damaged cold room floor panels that were underneath and the heater mat. By doing this, it allowed our team to clear the freezer cold room ready to accommodate the new cold room flooring panels.

After the cold room flooring and panels were removed, we were able to fit a new heater mat (to prevent ice build-up and frost heave!) and on top of that we placed the new 80mm PUR insulated cold room panels from Kingspan.

As these floor panels were modular, our team cam-locked the cold room panels together by spraying handheld foam into any voids around the freezer cold room’s perimeter – creating a completely sealed area. We then laid a new 5 bar chequer floor plate to help prevent further damage, stop any moisture from penetrating the joints and reduce the likelihood of staff slippages, completing the cold room flooring refurbishment.

By using modular cold room panels, the cam-lock key system allows our customers to achieve optimum insulation levels – which is extremely important in the food and drink retail industry due to the high-risk food products they store.

All that was left to complete this cold room refurbishment was to fit the cold room wall to the new cold room flooring, screw a low-level galvanised kick plate to the internal perimeter walls (to provide protection for the walls to prevent anything from damaging the cold room panel and causing the ceiling to fall through as a result) and fixed a new low-level barrier around the completed internal cold room walls.

Adding these cold room wall protection elements reduced the amount of cold room maintenance issues that occur, and the need for a replacement freezer cold room – emphasising just how beneficial cold room maintenance is!
