Garbage Cold Room and Dual Compartment Cold Room for Cruise Ship

Cold rooms are used in a range of industries, businesses, buildings, and locations – even on ships! Cruise ships and ships which require large amounts of food and drinks on board use cold rooms to store their produce and perishable goods. But there are more factors to consider when designing and building cold rooms on a ship – something that MTCSS recently experienced.

MTCSS’ customer required a range of cold rooms on their cruise ship to accommodate their storage requirements. One was for a chiller and freezer cold room for food and drink storage, the other was for a temperature-controlled room to store their garbage.

With several challenges to consider – including the unique shape, design and the risk of rust – the MTCSS team worked closely with the customer to deliver a cold room solution to adhere to their unique requirements and offer longevity.

The Cold Rooms

The first factor to consider in the cold room design was the risk of rust and cold room panel degradation. MTCSS designed the cold rooms with 304 class stainless steel cold room panels to negate this risk – which comes from proximity to salty sea air.

The shape and size of the cold room was completely bespoke to the customer’s requirements, detailed in drawings and a site survey. The cold room panels were cut to the correct sizes by MTCSS to fit with the existing structure of the cruise ship – following any angles within the walls and ceilings.

Access was another key element to consider when planning the project. The MTCSS team needed to understand the easiest and safest way to transport panels around the ship to minimise loss of time and disruption.

Garbage Locker and Dual Compartment Cold Room

The garbage locker was designed to suit the positive temperatures of a chiller cold room. It had an overall internal height of 2.1m and the panels were fitted to suit the 126° angle of the ship’s walls.

The cold room panels used to build both the garbage locker and dual compartment cold rooms – comprised of a walk-in chiller and walk-in freezer – were of 100mm thickness, and finished with stainless steel internally and white PVC externally. All of the cold room panels needed to be fixed directly to the ship’s wall to ensure there was no movement within the cold rooms or panels.

Within the walk-in chiller and walk-in freezer compartments, shelves were formed with the cold room panels for improved storage.

In the dual compartment cold room, MTCSS team included 100mm insulated base panels with 2mm thick stainless-steel overlay. These were bituthene taped to prevent water ingress and damage to the floor.

For access to the garbage cold room, MTCSS selected a hinged cold room door – size 700mm x 1800mm. In the dual compartment cold room, we installed two 700mm x 1900mm hinged cold rooms – one for chiller applications and one for freezer applications.

The freezer cold room door was also fitted with frame heaters to reduce the risk of ice build-up. All cold room doors were designed with a stainless steel internal finish and white external finish.

Cold rooms can be designed and built to suit different buildings, locations, applications and more. Whether you are looking for ‘standard’ rectangular cold room, or a completely bespoke cold room with sloped walls and ceilings – MTCSS are here to help!
