Through Wall and Straddle Unit Monoblock Refrigeration Systems: Explained by MTCSS
MTCSS can supply and install monoblock refrigeration units for small to medium capacity cold rooms. So whether you need a monoblock refrigeration system to suit your walk-in fridge or your freezer cold room, we’ve got the perfect solution for you.
Ensuring you’ve got a reliable refrigeration system for your business is essential, especially if your products rely heavily on being maintained to a specific temperature (for example, dairy storage).
MTH monoblock refrigeration units are currently available on the MTCSS Shop, for straddle and through wall applications, but what does this mean exactly? MTCSS are here to explain.
Monoblock Refrigeration Units – What Are They?
Before we delve into defining the two different refrigeration systems, we need to understand what a monoblock refrigeration unit is first.
A monoblock refrigeration unit is a convenient, self-contained, plug-in refrigeration system that’s pre-loaded with refrigerant. Depending on your requirements, they can span between chilled temperatures (for your walk-in fridges) between +1°C / +8°C and frozen temperatures (for your freezer cold rooms) down to -25°C.
They can either be installed through the wall or as a straddle unit, which is where the two different monoblock applications begin.
Through Wall and Straddle Unit Monoblocks
Put simply, the main difference between a through wall and straddle monoblock refrigeration unit is how it’s installed.
Straddle monoblocks are installed by slotting the system from above your cold room, and then building the roof over the top. Whereas through wall monoblock units are installed by cutting a hole into your cold room wall/cold room panel and sitting between the exterior and interior of your cold room.
What Refrigerants Are Used Within Through Wall and Straddle Monoblock Refrigeration Units?
As a result of the pipes within a monoblock system being interlinked, the size of the pipes are small, meaning that fewer refrigerants (with a lower charge) are required for your unit.
This is beneficial because if you had a larger refrigeration system that required a higher volume of refrigerant gas, it becomes a fire hazard due to the amount of gas (alongside the charge of the gas) passing through the system.
Therefore, propane and butane are commonly used refrigerants within monoblock refrigeration systems due to their charge being so small – meaning there is a lower risk of flammability.
Because propane is a natural refrigerant, its global warming potential (GWP) is much better (more environmentally-friendly) compared to alternative refrigerants that require a higher amount and have a higher GWP.
However, straddle and through wall monoblock refrigeration units can also use R452 and R449A (R452A for freezer cold room applications) refrigerants to achieve your desired temperature.
Chiller and Freezer Applications for Monoblock Refrigeration Units
Both our straddle and through wall monoblocks are suitable for chiller and freezer cold room applications and are available in a selection of capacities to suit your individual requirements.

Considerations When Using Straddle and Through Wall Monoblock Refrigeration Units
There are a few considerations to take into account when using a monoblock refrigeration unit. The most common ones are space and heat.
If your monoblock unit is being used within a smaller, enclosed area (such as a kitchen) then you should be wary of the temperature being expelled from the unit. This is due to it being harder for the air to be ventilated, resulting in an increase in internal temperature.
The refrigeration system absorbs all the heat from inside the cold room, and then expels this outside of your cold room. However, if your cold room dimensions are small, the excess heat may travel back into your cold room more easily, causing your internal temperatures to increase – in this case, you should allow for additional extraction or ventilation to be installed to prevent this from occurring.
Benefits of Straddle and Through Wall Monoblock Units
As briefly mentioned above, monoblock refrigeration units from MTH have several benefits for you and your business. Some of those benefits include:
- Quick, easy and cost effective to install – they’re a plug and play system
- Less impact on the environment – this is due to fewer/smaller amounts of refrigerants being required
- Easy maintenance – the single cover has been designed to allow for quick maintenance interventions
- Lower operating costs – this is dependent on your individual business requirements
