How to Improve Efficiency in your Walk-In Fridges and Walk-In Freezers
Are you struggling to efficiently run your cold room? At MTCSS we understand how costly this can be to your business. Formed in 2007, our staff have a combination of more than 50 years of industry related experience. This allows us to provide cold storage installations across numerous sectors. We know exactly what it takes to improve the efficiency of your cold room.
Regularly Clean Your Cold Room Equipment
The temperature of your cold room is an important factor and should be regularly measured and record. Refrigeration systems are responsible for keeping your cold room’s cool with the help of the insulation – to work efficiently your cold room refrigeration units must be kept clean.
The evaporator cells and condenser should be free of dust and other blockages which can restrict air output. These parts remove warm air from the room which helps to maintain its optimal temperature. Refrigeration units which are unclean will have to work harder to compensate for a lack of air flow. This may lead to pricier bills and in the long run could cause breakdowns or damage to your room.
MTCSS recommend that you have you check your refrigeration systems regularly and have the units serviced at least every six months.
Ensuring the cold room itself is clean – including cold room flooring, cold room door gaskets, and cold room panels – will also help maintain efficiency, safety, and longevity. How often you clean your cold room is dependent on its use, but you can find more cleaning tips here!
Repair Damage Immediately
If you notice any cracks in your cold room panels or cold room doors; any discolouration of the wall and ceiling panels; or if your cold room door isn’t closing and sealing, we recommend you get in contact with a cold storage expert at soon as possible.
Each of these issues can result in a downturn in efficiency due to affecting the insulation properties of your cold room and could indicate further faults, or costly issues. Repairing damage within your cold room, or replacing damaged parts, can help ensure your cold room’s efficiency is maintained.
MTCSS can offer cold room refurbishment and repairs, plus we provide a huge range of cold room spares and cold room door parts for next day delivery (if in stock & ordered by 1pm Monday to Thursday) on the MTCSS shop!

Choose a Specialist Cold Room Door
There are several types of cold room doors to suit walk-in chillers and walk-in freezers. Each have a range of benefits and can be customised your application and individual requirements.
Hinged cold room doors: ideal for walk-in freezers and cold rooms which require smaller door openings for personnel or roll-cage access.
Sliding cold room doors: ideal for larger door openings (eg. for pallet access), sliding cold room doors are perfect if you have minimal space to open a door. They are available in horizontal, vertical or automatic opening designs.
Semi-insulated hinged doors: also known as personnel doors or service doors, they are perfect if you have rooms of a positive temperature or for use dividing areas of different purposes like between a processing area and your office.
Choosing the correct cold room door for your specific application and temperature range, ensures your cold rooms are optimally insulated and there maintain efficiency.
It is also important to check your cold room doors aren’t damaged – this includes the cold room door gaskets and seals, door hinges and handles, and sliding systems where applicable. If you notice your cold room door is damaged, we recommend you look to get it repaired as soon as possible to ensure your refrigeration systems don’t have to work overtime to keep the air cool within your cold rooms!
Keep Cold Room Doors Closed
Anything that can negatively impact the temperature of your cold storage room must be avoided, if possible, which is why proper cold room management is important.
This may seem obvious, but it is important! If your cold room doors are not in use, it is imperative to keep them closed securely. If this fails to happen, air from outside the cold room will enter, unsettling the temperature and causing it to work harder to maintain the required temperature. Not only does this cost you money in the long term, it also means your cold room is being forced to overwork.
Increased energy bills come as a result of an overworked cold room while its lifespan will be dramatically shortened too. Door alarms can help you to monitor if your cold room doors are closed. They indicate if the doors are open for extended periods of time.
Insulated Curtains
To further prevent the loss of cold air from your cold room, you can use insulated curtains. Designed to fit snuggly between your walls, floor, and ceiling, they stop air flow from outside the room to inside, and vice versa. This is ideal if you require your door to be open for a small amount of time, for example if you have a goods delivery or if you are manoeuvring products from one room to another. MTCSS has insulated curtains available on our e-commerce shop, click here to see more!
